Fear of mother-in-law
Rajani was excited to show her cooking skills to her husband. She just came out of her cooking class. It was so exciting. She wanted to learn different things. She felt so sure that her husband Tarun would be impressed & her in-laws would admire her cooking too. Today she learnt more difficult item. She did it perfectly. Entire class appreciated it. She was so sure that they would admire her cooking. She knew entire class admired her cooking. It was limited but she decided to cook more in house. She went to market. She purchased everything which needed. She was sure that she got all. She was not expert in cooking now. She knew that she worked hard but she finished all in perfect way. She went in kitchen & started cooking. She began to feel so nice. She was doing it in perfectly by training. She went in house. She was so excited about all. She began to see hopes every where. Luckily no one was in home to disturb her. She didn’t want anyone to ask anything. She took out sample. She created in class. Then she began to measure everything properly in measurement scale. She wanted it to be perfect. She started to follow every instructions properly. She kept testing it time to time. Finally all became perfect. It was sweet dish so she put it in refrigerator to set. She was so excited about it. She could smell vanilla essence & pineapples. She needed cherry but she didn’t have it. She thought that it would be nice without cherry too. She was so pleased with her efforts. She began to wait for her in-laws. She knew that her in-laws Savita & Kishor would like sweet desserts. They were fond of wonderful desserts. She saw them admiring those desserts in many parties. She managed to cook something just like it. She knew that they hated her cooking. She always managed to miss something while cooking. She wanted to make it perfect but she never took interest in cooking. She wanted to do job. She never planned to become housewife but she couldn’t manage to get such good job when her Mom told her about this proposal she started to feel excited. Tarun was rich & famous. She was so happy when she understood that she was going to marry Tarun. He was son of famous business man. She wanted to marry him. When she met Harish she was on top of the world. She didn’t expecting him so nice. Harish was wonderful man. He loved her from heart. He never gave her any inferiority complex regarding her low financial background. She was so happy with him. He gave her whole freedom. He encouraged her. Since she started dating her every thing was perfect, he was perfect for her. But his parents! They were different story. Kishor wanted her to dress in perfect traditional way before people of village & in modern way before his business clients. According to him daughter-in-law supposed to act that way. She didn’t need job but her job was to impress every person who entered in house. She knew that she needed to accept it. According to all her father-in-law was not asking for big thing. It was not as if he was demanding some money from her parents or he wanted her to earn big salary. So she needed to keep him happy. She knew that people from village wanted her to become good cook while clients wanted her to follow modern style. She was trying to do both. But she was not managing it. Actually after marriage they were planning to live in different house but it was still under construction. She needed to do some interior which would be suitable for her. She knew that those changes would take time. But they were essential in her view & Tarun agreed with her. So while living with her in-laws she wanted to impress them. She wanted to appear perfect before them. She knew that she was getting all so she needed to do all. She began to sense that she needed to cook. She was never considered bad cook. She knew cooking so at beginning she entered in kitchen with full confidence but slowly she sensed that she didn’t understand what she supposed to do. Then she started to get confused about measurements too. In her house all measurements were different. She had one glass for measuring but here that glass was missing. Savita gave her one proper measurement pot but she didn’t understand it’s measurements. She was so confused. She didn’t understand those modern machines in kitchen. She used all those old machines. Soon she understood that she didn’t understand how to cook in this kitchen. Slowly she began to ask for help. Maid who belonged to poor family seemed know far better than her & that Maid kept taunting her on each point at her stupidity. She began to feel so upset. That Maid kept laughing on her. She was so upset. She never thought that one day she would be humiliated by maid. That maid was literally calling her stupid. She was so upset. She didn’t want anyone to teach her anymore. She decided to join cooking class. When she joined it, immediately that maid declared that it was waste of time. Sadly her in-laws nodded too. But she thought that it would be great & truly today she created good dessert. She was so happy. She arranged entire table for it. Then she placed her dessert in centre. She clicked one photo on mobile & sent it to her Mom. She was so happy. She began to wait. Then she heard voice of car. She sensed that her in-laws came. She knew that servants supposed to open door but she ran towards it without second thought. When she opened it, she noticed that Savita & Kishor both were not smiling so clearly something went wrong. She knew that she needed to stop her excitement but she couldn’t without second thought she declared “ I cooked new dessert. I want you to try it.” Kishor gave her angry look & said “ Let us at least come inside!” She was not blocking way but still she stood on corner. Savita gave her frustrating look too & they both went in their room. She kept waiting in corner with hope that they would open door but they didn’t. They didn’t come out for long time. Finally she didn’t have much option so she put her dessert back in refrigerator. She sensed that she couldn’t keep it outside like that. She tried to control her tears but she knew that she was crying already.
After sometime Rajani controlled her emotions. She began to paint. She loved painting. Tarun always admired her painting skill. She knew that she was not great painter in professional way. She was so happy to do it. She began to make colours. She wanted to create different concept. She began to start different design. She started to draw that dream which always had in her mind. She began to paint that nature which was wonderful. She started to watch it carefully. She began to feel enchanted by it’s look. She started to paint. Her world became so hopeful. She kept painting for long time. In room Savita started to complaining to Kishor “ I don’t like this girl. She doesn’t have manners. Now we need to tolerate her desserts too!! I don’t understand why did we okayed her marriage with our son?!” “Since I wanted a connection with her father. He is singing for my album free. I don’t need to pay.” Kishor smiled. Savita looked confused. Savita smiled. “Ohh so you replace that male singer with him!” “ Yes..yes in that song female singer is famous we can just add his voice. He doesn’t even demand money.” Savita began to laugh loudly. She started to dance slowly in her dream world. She loved money & for it she needed one more hit album by her husband. Her son was doing normal job. He was so honest that his earnings were never enough for her dream. She started laughing happily. After so many days finally her life was back to normal. She would get that hit then she could tell all that she was celebrity again. Then she suddenly remembered Rajani’s dessert. “ I will bring some dessert from refrigerator.” “ No..no not homemade!” Kishor ordered while making disgusting face. “ Okay..okay I will order something.” Kishor “ & remember this is just for one album. I found replacement already so you can replace your daughter if you want.” Kishor started laughing after saying this. Immediately Savita ordered lots of sweets from famous bakery & snacks shop. They didn’t care that Rajani would feel hurt. When door bell rang, Rajani went to open it. Maid was not there. Maid went to market to purchase vegetables. She saw delivery of snacks. She couldn’t question anyone. She gave artificial smile & took it. She sensed that payment was already made. She took package then she gave it to her in-laws. Savita didn’t look nervous at all. In fact she looked irritated. Savita “ Where is that Maid? We need plates for eating this.” Rajani “ She went in market.” “ Ohh then will you bring plates?!” She nodded. She was nothing but a maid. She went in kitchen. She took out plates. She even managed to serve snacks & sweets. She sensed that they didn’t even want to try her cooking. She went back in kitchen. She started to eat what she cooked. She was crying. She felt that it was tasty but no one was ready to eat it. She was so nervous about it. She started to control her emotions when Maid entered. Maid smiled & said “Did you cook this?” Maid started to look towards it with admiration. She told her “ Take some if you want!” Maid’s eyes shined happily. Maid “ Are you sure Madam?” “ Come on! You help me so much with cooking.” They had two maids. First senior maid targeted Rajani but this was younger one she always kept quiet & tried to help. She nodded. She ate it. Maid started to admire. Rajani was so happy. On that time her brother-in-law came. Actually her brother-in-law was staying in hostel. He also liked smell. He washed his hands & demanded to eat too. He admired it too. Rajani felt so happy. After sometime finally Kishor & Savita came in kitchen. By then they managed to finish half of desert. Still Savita looked upset to see so much was still remaining. Then Savita scolded her younger son Jatin “ Why did you eat homemade dessert? We bought special one.” “ Mom I like this.” Jatin kept eating it happily. Then after sometime he went to wash & clean himself. Savita gave her angry look. Savita “ Rajani you can act with your husband as you want but don’t spoil Jatin like this.” Rajani looked nervous. Maid ran towards basin & started pretending that she was just cleaning dishes not eating dessert. Rajani felt that glad about it. Rajani began to feel so guilty about giving dessert to all. She decided that she needed to throw remaining dessert. She felt that she was doing crime by cooking. She knew that she needed to get rid of it. She started to take it towards dustbin when Maid stopped her. Maid “ Madam what are you doing?” “ I must not give it to anyone. My mother-in-law told me!” “ Don’t throw. I will take it to my home.” She nodded. Her maid took away some. Rajani then threw away remaining in dustbin. Rajani smiled. Now Rajani decided to quit cooking class. She sensed that home made food was not nice thing. She knew that her in-laws didn’t like. She went in room. Jatin called Tarun & told about dessert. When Tarun came back from office, he was so excited about dessert. Tarun was shocked when he didn’t offered any dessert. But Savita offered him lot of ordered dessert but he wanted dessert which Rajani cooked. Finally Jatin asked “ Why you are not giving that dessert which you gave me?” Rajani felt so nervous. Rajani “ Actually something was wrong with it. I need to throw it.” Savita laughed. Tarun kept watching Rajani carefully. He sensed that she was scared & she was shivering. He didn’t understand what was happening but he was angry. He didn’t ate much he just went in room. When he went to wash basin suddenly maid appeared out of somewhere. Maid got some dessert on plate. He was confused. “ What is it?” Maid gave nervous smile & said “ I save this for you. Actually Madam cooked it for you..then your Mom told her she must not give home made food to her son so Madam threw it.” “ What?” He felt so sad & shocked. Maid nodded. “ Don’t tell anyone I told you. Eat this.” He smiled & started to ate it. He took so much that he didn’t left any place for food. Then he washed his hand & went out. He wanted to talk with Rajani but he was so confused. He sensed that Rajani was getting over dominated by his Mom. He sensed that Rajani was needed to shift from that house soon. It was very important for them. He felt so sad that such nice food was wasted.
When Tarun came in room, he immediately started to talk about shifting. Rajani began to feel so scared. She didn’t understand why she was feeling so sick. She felt as if she wanted to vomit. She ran in washroom. Tarun was so confused. Tarun ran after her. Tarun “ What happened?” Rajani began to feel sick. She didn’t understand cause. Rajani “ I don’t know why I start to feel so sick suddenly?” Tarun looked concerned. Tarun “ Let’s go to Doctor.” She nodded. She wanted to go to Doctor but then she suddenly began to feel scared. She sensed that her mother-in-law wouldn’t like it. She didn’t want to upset her. She said “ I am okay.” Tarun could see pale look of her face. Her weight was fine but still she was looking pale. In fact he sensed that many times she ate too much. He didn’t mind if she got overweight. He liked her in that way too. But today he began to sense there was some sorrow on her face. He insisted “ Let’s go to Doctor.” She was feeling so sick. She finally decided to go to Doctor. She was so scared. She began to shiver. Tarun immediately took out coat. He was so nervous. She was looking so sick. He called Doctor & took appointment. He went there. He knew that he needed to wait. Her teethes were little making noise due to shivering. He was so tense. Finally they went inside. Doctor saw her shivering. Doctor started to check her. Doctor began to look confused. Doctor “ Your wife is okay. Her BP is little bit high but it can’t cause this shivering.” Then Doctor turned towards her & asked “ Are you scared of something?” She was so confused. She was feeling so scared but she didn’t understand cause. “ I am scared. But I don’t understand why?” Now this was more confusing for all. Doctor “Have you feel scared this way before?” She turned her negatively. Doctor looked towards Tarun suspiciously. Tarun immediately told Doctor “ Doctor we are happy in our married life. We don’t had any argument. Of course few small one..” “ Like?” Tarun stopped for sometime. Then he decided to be honest. “ She is obeying Mom too much!” Doctor smiled & asked Rajani “ Are you scared of Savita?” “ No..no!” Rajani declared this in such a strange way that all sensed that it was fake. Doctor “ This is psychological.” She began to get angry. “ I am not mad.” Tarun looked shocked. Tarun “ I don’t expect this from educated girl like your! Come on! You know very well that normal people need psychiatrist too. How could you tag a patient to psychiatrist as mad person as if it is something disgusting!” She started to feel confused. She knew that she needed to act like person. She was not acting that way. She started to feel upset. Rajani “ I don’t want other to know that I have this trouble.” Doctor “ Why your family need to know? You can go out with Tarun!” She smiled & agreed. Then Doctor gave her some temporary medicine. Tarun immediately took appointment of psychiatrist. He didn’t want Rajani to change her mood. He was so happy when all fixed. He smiled happily. Rajani was so nervous. Rajani didn’t understand why she felt so scared. But when she reached home, Savita immediately came out & asked “ What wrong with her? Are you sick like that before? I hope you have not hidden some sickness of your form us!” “ No..no Mom this is just normal fever. Doctor said due to change of weather.” Kishor began to give angry look too. Rajani immediately started shivering. Tarun took hold of her hand. He tried to steady her but it was not working. Finally he took her in room. She began to cry. He sensed that his parents were upsetting her. Tarun “ We need to shift.” “ But they will get angry. I don’t want to shift.” He knew that she was scared of them. But he didn’t sense that her fear reached to this level. He wanted to argue but then he decided that Psychiatrist would handle this in better way. He just gave her medicine & told her to go to sleep. Finally after taking medicine she fall asleep. He sensed one thing that he needed to convince her. He took appointment but he was not sure she would come. After that day he noticed that she was staying in their bedroom only. Instead of reducing her fears his Mom Savita kept taunting. Soon he began to sense that Savita didn’t care for her. He began to think that Savita didn’t want Rajani to settle with him. He understood all. They permitted their marriage since they wanted Rajani’s father to sing for them. It was just for one album. He knew his father Kishor found another singer already. He didn’t need Rajani’s father now. He saw that in news. He understood his Mom Savita was trying to manage his divorce. It was so scary. He loved Rajani. He decided to call Psychiatrist again. He requested as early appointment as possible. Finally they gave appointment after two days. Until then he decided not to talk about shifting. He decided that he could tell Psychiatrist about it. He was so tense. Finally that day came. He was scared that Rajani might deny to going. But Rajani was feeling so nervous. She wanted to get over her sickness. Tarun took her to Psychiatrist. Tarun went inside but Psychiatrist told him to go out. Tarun knew everyone felt that he was abusive. He didn’t care what they felt about him. He just wanted her to be normal. Then he called inside. Then Psychiatrist told Rajani to go out. It was clear that Psychiatrist sensed that Tarun wanted to tell something to him. Tarun immediately told all about his parents. Psychiatrist nodded. Psychiatrist “She need to shift but she needed to learn to fight too. She developed Anxiety Disorder due to this. She need to learn to handle this. You don’t need to worry. It will take time but I will teach her.” Then Psychiatrist explained how long it might take etc. Psychiatrist told Tarun that he could shift whenever he wanted. Psychiatrist would easily convince it to Rajani. Tarun was so happy. Tarun didn’t see difference immediately but slowly Tarun started to notice difference. Rajani began to laugh & enjoy. Savita kept dragging her down but Rajani’s spirit didn’t go down. Sometimes Rajani cried but it was for limited time after sometime she would come back in her old spirit again. She started to laugh & enjoy. Tarun began to live happy life even in his parent’s house. Finally after sometime they shifted & on that day Savita gave her jewellery which they gave to daughter-in-law as per tradition. Tarun could see that his parents were not happy about it but finally they gave up. Tarun & Rajani’s love forced them to accept their marriage. But Tarun & Rajani knew that it was not possible without psychiatric help so they always thanked Psychiatrist daily in their heart for showing them right route towards happiness in life.
